This talk by world-renowned author Simon Winchester was part of an event in Canaan, Connecticut a couple years ago. Simon’s recounting of his travels by train, which include a trip from London to Hong Kong via Moscow, enchanted the audience that summer’s day. When we found we could create a podcast from the recording, we thought it would be an inspiring way to start this new venture, Train Time. (There’s a transcript, too, but you’ll see that the AI system didn’t manage a lot of the place names!)
Newsletters will now come from Substack, and you can listen to the podcasts here or at Apple, Spotify, or YouTube Podcasts.
You hear shortly about online events geared to specific topics or towns (coming up next: NW Connecticut). We welcome organizational sponsorship of the new podcast, as well as your individual support. Even more important, we welcome your questions and comments.
Support for Train Time goes to the Barrington Institute and is tax-deductible.
Train Time 2025
Trains are our tomorrow. At Train Time, experts of all stripes, from the US, UK, and other countries, join host Karen Christensen to talk about all aspects of modern passenger rail development. Train Time is not about heritage or tourist scenic railroads, but instead about rail as a sustainable way to get around locally, nationally, and internationally - good for people, communities, economies, and the natural world.
